Provocative but Functional. Coffee tables can be a fusion of the living and the abstract - a combination of aquarium and modern art. An ottoman combining storage, coffee pot and fish - though not fish for eating but for discussion. It is a living item of furniture that is both beautiful and thought provoking. A provocative item of furniture is sure to keep the conversation flowing over coffee. To put it in simpler terms, it should be a piece of furniture that people notice and comment upon, but that can also be used for setting down snacks, coffee cups and drinks glass. That, after all, is its primary raison d’être. Above all else, this type of table must be functional and the fish should not get in the way of the cups, nor should the books leave no room for the plates.
Before beginning your search for the perfect coffee table you should therefore work out what it is that you want from it. Do you want it to be purely ornamental- to create a modern and stylish statement, or are you more interested in its functions- do you plan to eat from it, place drinks on it, store magazines in it or use it as a display cabinet?
The purpose of a coffee table seems rather straight forward, at its most basic level it is a table in the centre of your living room on which you can put your coffee, magazines, and remotes, it may also moonlight as a dining table, a desk, a children’s everything table and a footrest, or at times double up as extra seating or a place to sort your washing. This relatively straightforward piece of furniture however has the potential to define your character, or at least the objects on it do, so what does your coffee table say about you?
Having a handy spot for food and drink is not the only reason for a coffee table. Lamps can be placed on coffee or cocktail tables. Coffee or cocktail tables can provide the perfect place to play a rousing game of cards or a favorite board game. For families with small children, coffee tables are the perfect height for meals and playtime. Sharp corners might not be the best choice for children’s use, however.
