Collecting Cookbooks - McCall's Cookbooks

McCall's magazine began in 1870 as The Queen of Fashion, a publication devoted to fashion news and the promotion of the company's sewing patterns.  It was renamed McCall's in 1902, and the periodical evolved over the years to encompass articles and columns on health, cooking, celebrities, fiction, needle arts, the famous Betsy McCall paper dolls, and a realm of other items of interest to women.  McCall's ceased publication after 125 years in March 2001 (when it became Rosie), and although the magazine itself didn't survive, the recipes and cookbooks published under the McCall's name have not lost favor with the cooking public.

 Get a different McCall's cookbook each week from the Acme grocery store for only .99 cents.  Cookbook holder and Index book was free with the purchase of first book.

Inside some of the books was an order form and envelope for ordering the books by mail.

This set was originally published in 1965.

Many doll collectors like the first book in the series, as the Cookie Collection has one page with photographs of the Betsy McCall Doll baking cookies.  Also in the book is a recipe for Betsy McCall's Ginger Cut-Out Cookies.

My Favorite McCall's Recipe
Baked Macaroni and Cheese

 

1 pkg (8 oz) elbow macaroni
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teapsoon pepper
2 cups milk
8 oz. Cheddar cheese, grated (2 cups)

1.  Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Cook macaroni as the package label directs; drain.

2.  Meanwhile, melt butter in a medium saucepan; remove from heat.  Stir in the flour, salt and pepper until smooth.  Reduce heat, and simmer mixture 1 minute.  Remove from heat.

3.  Stir in 1-1/2 cups cheese and the macaroni.  Pour into a 1-1/2 quart casserole, and sprinkle remaining cheese over top.

4.  Bake 15 to 20 minutes, or until cheese is golden-brown.

Makes 4 to 6 servings.
